Tardive Dyskinesia Attorneys
Tardive dyskinesia is a neurological
syndrome caused by the long-term use of neuroleptic drugs. Neuroleptic
drugs are generally prescribed for psychiatric disorders, as well as for
some gastrointestinal and neurological disorders. Tardive dyskinesia is
characterized by repetitive, involuntary, purposeless movements. Features
of the disorder may include grimacing, tongue protrusion, lip smacking,
puckering and pursing, and rapid eye blinking. Rapid movements of the
arms, legs, and trunk may also occur. Impaired movements of the fingers
may appear as though the patient is playing an invisible guitar or piano.
Tardive, meaning late and dyskinesias being movement disorders are neurological
side effects of antipsychotic medications that can be disabling and disfiguring.
It was believed that newer antipsychotic drugs did not have as high of
a Tardive Dyskinesia risk, however the atypical antipsychotics have been
linked to hyperglycemia and diabetes. Tardive Dyskinesia is still a risk
of atypical antipsychotics, especially when used in higher dosages. The
FDA has requested all atypical antipsychotics carry a new labeling warning
of hyperglycemia and diabetes.
Early detection of Tardive Dyskinesia symptoms is critical in reducing
the severity of the often irreversible disorder, but it has been found
that Tardive Dyskinesia patients rarely identify early warning signs,
especially since the involuntary movements do not cause physical discomfort.
