What Side Effects does Reclast® Cause?Reclast is a bisphosphonate (BP) drug approved for the treatment of osteoporosis and the prevention or skeletal fractures in patients receiving cancer treatments. The drug is commonly prescribed to post-menopausal women to prevent the bone density loss associated with osteoporosis. Unfortunately, Reclast and the other bisphosphonates administered for the prevention of bone loss have been linked to severe side effects. Some of the side effects associated with long term Reclast usage include kidney damage, kidney failure, unusual bone fractures of the femur, and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Reclast® linked to fractures and skeletal problemsReclast and other bisphosphonates including Actonel and Fosamax have been linked to unusual bone fractures and skeletal problems in women who have been taking Reclast long term, five or more years. Side effects of long term Reclast usage can include atypical femoral fractures, hip fractures, musculoskeletal pain, low impact fractures, femoral shaft fractures, thigh deformity, and leg shortening. In February of 2011 the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published their findings about long term usage of Reclast and other bisphosphonates in older patients. They found that Reclast and bisphosphonates dramatically increase the danger for atypical femoral shaft fractures. Reclast® and osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ)Use of Reclast and other BP drugs (bisphosphonates) is linked to increased risk of the patient developing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is also referred to as necrosis of the jaw, phossy jaw, dead jaw disease, jaw death, and biophossy jaw. This Reclast linked side effect can cause pain, loss of teeth, and disfigurement. Reclast and bisphosphonate use is so closely associated to the condition of osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), that it is commonly referenced in medical journals as BONJ or bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw. Patients who are on one type of bisphosphonate such as Reclast and then switch to another bisphosphonate are at a higher risk of suffering from BONJ. Reclast® and the risk of kidney failureFrom April 2007 to February 2009 the FDA received over 24 cases of renal impairment, severe renal failure, and death in patients taking Reclast. Because of these alarming reports about kidney damage associated with Reclast usage, the FDA had the makers of Reclast update the Warnings and Precautions on the label. The FDA also advised healthcare professionals to closely monitor persons getting Reclast treatments.
